Lt. William Calley was the officer that was charged with the murder of numerous civilians concerning the My Lai Massacre. During the trail, he was tried and convicted of the premeditated murder of 22 villagers out of the 507 that died in the massacre. After the trail had ended Calley addressed the jury by saying, “Yesterday you stripped me of all my honor, please by your actions that you take here today, don’t strip future soldiers of their honor-I beg you.” The prosecution responded by saying that he had stripped himself of his honor by murdering women and children. The jury sentenced Calley to a life of hard labor. However, Calley only served mere days in the Fort Benning stockade before being placed under house arrest. After that point his sentence was then constantly reduced. Until finally, his sentence was ultimately reduced to time served by President Nixon. He was sentenced to parole in November, 1974 and is still alive today living out his days at his father-in-laws jewelry store.
